EVIL in the world

I said the next story would be about calling 911, and this is incredibly creepy, but I wish I would have known I would have needed to do it again quite soon after I wrote that. This is a very upsetting story with no humor what so ever, you might want to skip to the next story.

On Friday night Tom and I decided to stay in and watch TV since he wasn’t feeling well. My Cousin was coming in from Las Vegas to do the California Aids Ride so I decided to also do a bit of cleaning and Laundry. As the night wore on I lost a bit of velocity and began to just watch TV. Tom had gone to bed and I decided it was time to make up the bed in the guest room. I jump on the computer for a few minutes when I hear a knock at the door. I figure it must be one of the girls that live downstairs since you need a key to get upstairs to our door. I notice that the TV is a little loud but not too bad, Tom thinks otherwise by the way.

When I open the door there is a police officer who walk in and says, “Excuse me, can I talk to you inside for a few minutes-Do you know the girls downstairs?” I reply yes that I know them and have only lived here for a few months. He asks how long I have been home and if anyone else is here. I let him know that I have been home all evening with Tom who is asleep. I am now getting the feeling that something bad has happened; I’m getting scared and ask if the girls are alright. He informs me that Valerie has been attacked and she is being taken to the hospital. I am now in shock.

After the officer leaves Tom gets up and says he thought I should have asked more questions. He’s right but there was the whole shock thing going on. It turns out the more we found out the worse it got. The man attacked her as she was coming in the front door, he might have used the Spare Key that they kept outside (BAD IDEA) and was waiting for her inside, we don’t know. The police had fingerprinted the whole downstairs. Valerie had left a face print on Toms VW bug. Her Shoes are still in front of the bug.  After the Police had left Valerie’s roommate Charo came home, and had no clue about what had happened. She used the spare key to get in put it back and got ready for bed. She noticed the cat was freaked out a decided to leave the front door to their flat open so se could wander about. When tom and I got up to go to a family function the next day it was quite freaky to see the door open. We knocked but Charo was sound asleep still. When we went to leave the garage door had been locked with the panic lock, which we never use. We still don’t know who locked it and why.

On Sunday when we got home from the movies the front door was WIDE open, even though we dead bolted the lock when we left. That evening when Charo came home was when we found out about the spare key, and that Charo had left the front door to her flat open for cat and was sleeping when we knocked. Oh did I mention that the key was missing, we found out latter that Valerie’s boyfriend came by and picked it up. It was still unnerving when the power went out for two hours later that evening.

As of right now Valerie is alright, unnerving shaken but alright. She is staying at her boyfriend's house and says she will not be home for a couple of weeks at least if ever. Charo is going to be staying at her sisters but at this time is not planning on moving out, although everyone is telling her she should.   Tom and I are making flyers to put in our neighbor’s mailboxes warning to be extra careful. We called the landlord are have a list of a few things that need his attention: a security gate, motion light, and stronger back door. The last two have been a concern for a while but now it seems crazy not to have the gate.

So remember everyone, Always be aware of your surroundings and that a self-defense class is better taken as prevention now than a plan for the future.

Oh Eric! That's HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please be careful, and send her all the warmest of well wishes that you can. She's in my thoughts!!!! I'm tearing up just thinking about it. You're a good friend, so I know you'll be helpful to her. Do they know who did this? Any leads??

Re: Oh My God!
They don't know who did it yet, but Tom and i flyered the neighborhood and the police got a few good fingerprints off of Tom's VW Bug. Hopefully the police will be able to match the fingerprints. Keep your fingers crossed.

Even more frightening and unsettling to hear this time than the first time. These things really can happen anywhere... sadly, the world has a very dark side to it. Your advice at the end may sound too simple, but it is wise and well worth remembering.

You and Tom were good friends to do what you could to help at the time.

What became of Valerie and Charo?

Charo moved back in with her mother in east bay... it was really sad because it was her first time living away from her family and she was nearly 30.

Valerie now living further down Market Street, a friend of hers lives in her old place now and he is great. He tells us Valerie is doing well. We haven't seen her since she moved out.
