Questions Answered- dailybinx - me as a child

What were you like as a child?

This is probably the hardest question to answer. There is so much i could write, different directions I could take.

I was quiet, I was shy. I was always smiling even if I felt more like crying. I was frustrated in school because I was told I was dumb, but I knew I was smart. I just couldn’t prove it because of my learning disability. I firmly believe I had blond hair until fourth grade. It didn't matter what logic you used to point out my hair was brown. I was born toe-headed and as is slowly turned to blond then brown I still kept the self image of the blond hair. I was stubborn, I could win any battle of will. I had a high threshold for pain which came in useful very often. I was a bee magnet. I’m sure I have been stung by hundreds of bees. I loved Blondie, ELO, Pat Benatar and Pink Floyd. My favorite movies were Xanadu, The cat from outer space, and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band. Whether I enjoyed them because they were "good" or they tortured my dad is debatable. I wanted to roller-skate to school with colors flowing out behind me, I wanted one an alien cat who could talk as well as one of those crazy looking ornate horns.

The Olympics were in Los Angeles in 1984 and all of LA was caught up in the fever. I loved it, bland walls along freeways were turned into murals with space ships, kids playing and gymnasts. So as we sat in the traffic going so slow I had something to look at that captured my imagination. I wanted to be a gymnast, I wanted to win the gold. I would spend most days doing handstands, cartwheels, roundabouts and even flips. I took gymnastics for several years and was quite good at everything except the parallel bars (I kept messing up my thumbs) I didn’t have enough upper body strength to be very good at the rings either. I was best on the uneven bars. I could flip over and under and did it without any fear. As I grew older they told me I had to stop the uneven bars because boys didn’t compete in the uneven bars and my interest in gymnastics faded and I decided to watch Saturday morning cartoons instead.

Where do you think we would be if they encouraged us to keep rocking the uneven bars? I'd like to think we would be teammates at the Olympics.
