The Ghost in the Sandstorm.

When my family arrived in Vegas the sandstorm was blasting at full strength. If I remember correctly we weren’t planning on stopping in Vegas but the storm made it too dangerous to drive. My dad pulled our white van up to a small hotel casino and my mom began prepping us for our trek in the sand blasting blizzard. I had my little green suitcase in my tiny right hand my mom’s hand in my left. My brother had her other hand and was carrying a normal sized suitcase in his other hand.

My dad flung open the sliding side door and we ran into the storm. I closed my eyes and the sand stung as it hit my face, I have no idea how my mom managed to get us safely into the hotel. When my dad would arrive later after parking the van he had the benefit of having his huge shielded sunglasses. But my Dad hadn’t arrived yet when I saw my first ghost. We were waiting for him near the front door and someone from the hotel was helping my mother.

I was watching the door anxiously for my dad’s arrival when a thudding noise quieted the front portion of the casino and most people eyes turned to join mine on the front door. The thudding grew louder and a black hat and umbrella flew past the door. And then a black suitcase bounced and stopped dead center in front of the door as if being set there by an invisible hand. My eyes widened. To my horror the automatic doors opened. A moment later they closed and another gust from the sandstorm took the suitcase away. But I knew the ghost had already come inside. When my dad did arrive much to my mom’s relief, she shifted me from clinging to her leg and into my dad’s arms. Not even the one armed cowboy slot machine could take my mind off of the sight of my first ghost.

Thank you. Either I am being visited by a muse or I am finally growing out of my Ellen style of writing.
