The brother.

redarius's post made me think way back...

Way back in the early day of the internets there were two bothers Dan and Steve Case. Steve was the CEO of America Online while his brother Dan competed as the CEO of investment bank, Hambrecht and Quist. I was one of many desktop support personnel at H&Q and I hated going up to the 18th floor were all the scary executives spent their time. My most memorable trip up to the 18th floor happened when Dan’s “assistant” (he called her his secretary) was missing in action. He explained that he was having problems printing an email. I tried to connect remotely to help him quickly but couldn’t connect to his computer. I had to venture to the top floor to investigate. I learned more than I ever wanted to know on this trip. When I arrived in his office I noticed his computer wasn’t turned on. So I turned it on. When I launched his email program I noticed all the emails were almost a year old. Slowly his new emails began to download. Eventually the email he wanted to print out arrived in his inbox and I helped printed it out for him. He thanked me and began to write on the back of the email and said. It’s really important I reply to this email as soon as (whatever his assistants name was) returns.

All of a sudden it all became clear his assistant had access to his email from her machine. She printed out his mail, he wrote his response on the back and she typed his reply. He hadn’t turned on his computer in months. His brother ran the largest internet/email company and he had never even used email.

Of course it made me think of you... I just know that if I posted about how I thought of you standing naked on a rock with erect nipples calling forth an ice beast... people would request pictures I can't produce. I don't need to disappoint people more than I already do!

You don't stand naked when summoning ice beasts. You'd likely lose some bits if you did that. That wouldn't be fun.

That is funny. If I remember correctly, in those days I was a so-called 'beta tester' for AOL. I was kind of an early adopter and got all this free time for doing basically, since I wasn't all that savvy, nothing. I bailed the good ship AOL just as they were becoming, at least in my eyes, too main stream. There was something about it that I just didn't want to be part of.

I'm a software developer who never formally learned to type.

I'm 31 and have my own method, so it's too late to change now.

The Magnificent Tree is probably my favourite Hooverphonic album. Vinegar and Salt makes me yell the lyrics.

Frickin' unbelievable. I'd like to think that everyone at the top isn't as hopeless and clueless ... but I know better.

Oh, and did you dine at Fuzio last Thursday evening?

Nope. I was home sick and eating soup last Thursday. I know I have a doppelganger in the city. It must have been him.

Suddenly, I'm very grateful I didn't consider doing the unintentionally creepy but still very creepy "I don't know you but I read you on the internet" introduction.
