The sound of tires.

et_blackbird left for Texas this morning. Last night we had lots of fun with bete_lumineux and atarashiihito (Malakai and Orion). I am really in awe when I think about how unthinkable the night would have been just a few months ago. When I first tried to meet Derek while I was in London it was a total disaster and not only did we not met up, but due to the airlines in Germany having a terrible policies towards people in wheelchairs, Derek never mad it to London at all!

I was worried that something might go wrong when we were trying to meet in Berlin in September. As when you meet any online friend for the first time I wondered if my he was going to be the way he represented himself online, interestingly he had been keeping a secret for about a month.

I arrived at the Ostbanhoff train station early, I found my way to the lockers and realized I had no change. I wandered back to the McDonald’s and bought an juice drink to break my bill. By the time I wandered back to the lockers I had decided where I was going to wait for Derek to arrive. There was a giant glass wall with one large and two small blackbirds with wings spread in flight emblazoned on the glass wall to keep people from trying to walk through the glass.

I sat there under the black birds waiting for et_blackbird, with any sound of wheels I would look up from my copy of Senses Working Overtime By Naomi Nash. I heard the sound of wheels and despite the fact that they sounded to high pitched I would look up to see a stroller. Then a bike. Finally I saw a wheel chair but the little old lady in it didn’t look anything like the few pictures I had seen of Derek. So I went back to reading. I was happily following the character’s through the fabulous book when I felt eyes upon me. I started to look at the person standing in front of me. He was tall and it took me a while to guide my gaze to his face. I was hit by two shocking revelations, it was Derek and he was standing! Holy shit! He had been out of his wheelchair for a little over a month thanks to the last surgery he had.

If you were to tell me before that day I would be playing Dance Dance Revolution with Derek, Orion and Malakai by the end of the year, I would have called you delusional. But last night we all played Dance Dance Revolution and Derek did quite well for a beginner and amazingly well for someone fresh out of a wheelchair!

What a wonderful story. And to think there was a window with black birds etched in them. And you spotted them. WOW.
Glad to hear Derek is doing well.

You write these things so well. I remember these moments: the blackbirds, the surprise in your eyes that day in Berlin, the surprise in your eyes that evening in San Francisco when we played DDR.

It is thanks to dear friends like you that I have come so far, so fast. Thank you, and thank you for sharing your view of these moments.
