Lately I’ve felt completely overwhelmed, a bit sad that I about the work situation, and unenthusiastic about any subjects to write about. Ever since seeing phinny’s play “Lydia in Bed” at Theater of Note when I was in LA, I’ve wanted to write something that could get produced. Nothing so big as a play, just a scene or something. But I haven’t even been able to make a decent journal entry.

I’ve been obsessively listening to M83 the last few days, especially “Car Chase Terror!” Their albums remind me of Air’s Virgin Suicide soundtrack. “Turn the key. Go! Go!” There is just something about their music that draws you in. “He’s going to hit us faster! Faster!” Makes you sad. “He’s going to kill us for sure.” Puts you on edge. “Shut up.” Puts visions in your head. “Look at my hands, I’m shaking.” And makes you feel lost.

I wish I could find a site that has their lyrics on it. “Until the night is over” is a such a beautiful song.

Those Frenchy sure are musical. I've been listening to a lot of French bands lately. Vitalic is another one you should check out, for the dance music lover inside all of us.

I found a little iTunes program that sits on the menu bar. With it you can search for lyrics of the current song that iTunes is playing. You can find it here:

Oh right! the M83 CD has all the lyrics in it. At least for Before The Dawn Heals Us. If you ever need to know, come ask me.

On the one hand, writing is a skill that needs to be practised regularly. You need to write a bit every day/few days, like a task you set yourself. It can be a journal entry, or a lyric, or a piece of fiction: whatever shape you feel comfortable with. It's like going to the gym or learning to play the piano: you have to put into your practice time.

On the other hand, writing only works when iot works. It won't work every day, and it won't work sometimes for weeks on end. You can reserve your practice time, and do your practice every day, and it'll all end up binned because there's something indefinable that isn't working: your mood, or your energy levels, whatever.

So there's a strange dichotomy to writing.

You write well. You tell stories well, and you have a good sense of language and timing. Keep writing, a bit every day, and sooner or later, everything will click and you will produce that piece you want. If an idea isn't developing right now, work on something else and come back to the original thing later.
