Ruled by addiction

I made an agreement with myself that I was going to cut back on my soda consumption when I returned from the Cruise to Mexico. I decided that i would only allowing myself to have Coke with meals. I am drinking a coke as I type and it's 10:30 of the 2nd day. I lasted one full day! I had always thought of myself being stronger than anything I could be addicted to.

Tom has voiced his worried about me drinking alcohol because he has seen my father and brother in action. My father is a controlled alcoholic my brother has no control whatsoever. I have always been a very controlled person with no fear of becoming an alcoholic. My brother once told me that he would never become a drug addict because it would get in the way of his alcoholism, He was joking but I'm sure he knew he was speaking the truth. I guess Caffeine is my addiction which I must keep battling for control. It won't kill me but it bothers me that I couldn't go more than a day without breaking the easy rule I had set for myself. Back on the wagon I go.

I did a quick perusal of everyone's LJ entries but over a week is too much to attempt so if you have a post you think i should read, please let me know!

QUITTING SODA?!?!?
Forget it. It's not an addiction - it's a lifestyle choice! Besides, it's all a conspiracy by Juan Valdez, the Pharmaceutical companies, Libertarians, those damn Frozen Orange Juice conglomerates, Major League Baseball, and atheists who are trying to stop us from getting our carbonization freak on. Don't give into them! Fight the Power!

A thought on soda
I would like to suggest an experiment. It doesn't sound like you're so much addicted to the caffeine as having soda. Soda is tasty, most of us group up with it.

The experiment would be, if you can tolerate rootbeer... to try switching to Barq's rootbeer, cos it's better for your body and your teeth than coke but still has caffeine. Then you might after a couple weeks of getting used to the taste of rootbeer, pull a fast one on your body and switch to any other brand of rootbeer, cos most of the others have no caffeine at all. After a few weeks of caffeine-free rootbeer you'll know that if the addiction is to caffeine or if it's just your tastebuds knowing what they like.

Just a thought :)

Re: A thought on soda
I'm pretty sure it's mostly the caffeine, I love drinking Canada Dry in the evenings... if I drink anything with Caffeine after 8pm I can't sleep. maybe I should just try to cut the numbers rather than say when I am allowed to have it. I tend to really crave a coke right before lunch.

Yeah. I can relate. I mean.. the ONE and ONLY thing that has kept me off hardcore drugs for the past 7 years has been.. my salvation!... coffee & cigarettes. i mean, if i didn't have those TWO things, i'd prolly be shooting up in my eye right now. ;-)

if you look at everything from a larger perspective like that, then your caffeine addiction is hardly worth complaining about! lol. but then again, we all have our limits, and our weaknesses, and i think that if you just kind of cut back a little or start drinking something else then you'll feel better about it all.

i've missed your posts!

Thank you. It's so true that my addiction could be much worse, I'm just a little disappointed that I couldn't go more than two days. I'm glad I am back, next boat I get one better have free or cheap internet connection. $1 for less then 5 minutes is robbery!

for me one of the weird side effects of quitting smoking was that i quit drinking caffeine too. or at least i had quit drinking caffeine until i just got my new job...

i guess my question is what do you associate drinking coke with? is there any specific activity that makes you crave a soda? can you quit one thing and in doing so make the other easier to avoid?

Soda is just so easy and yummy and it gets me moving... I don't drink Coffee, never developed the taste for it. I don't associate coke with anything but usually have one between 10-11 am and if unchecked will drink several more before dinner. I once forgot to eat for an entire day because I had drank so many cokes I never got hungry!
